Versatile pine bark extract

Pycnogenol is the registered trade name for an extract derived from French maritime pine bark. It is used as a supplement to heal and protect the body in many ways. Pycnogenol is rich in natural compounds such as proanthocyanidins, catechins, bioflavonoids, and phenolic acids – all known for their powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Skin health
A 2012 study found that pycnogenol improves skin elasticity and hydration in post-menopausal women by increasing hyaluronic acid and elastin in the skin. It also slows ageing and inhibits and reduces pigmentation. Pycnogenol appears to protect the skin against UV radiation. It may take up to eight weeks of supplementation for this benefit to take effect.

Circulation
One of the outstanding properties of pycnogenol is its effect on circulation. It strengthens the walls of the blood vessels and fine capillaries. It also improves blood flow by increasing nitric oxide levels in the blood. People with painful, swollen legs and chronic venous insufficiency may benefit from taking pycnogenol. For the same reasons, men with erectile dysfunction may want to give it a try. Pycnogenol works well in combination with L-arginine but may take up to three months to work.

Diabetes
Pycnogenol benefits diabetics in several ways. Its positive effect on circulation is important, as is its effect on inflammatory markers and blood cholesterol levels. Those with diabetic retinopathy or who are at risk of developing it may find pycnogenol helpful.

Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
Pycnogenol improves blood flow to the cochlea in the inner ear, where it lowers inflammation and fights free-radical damage. In a 2014 study on tinnitus, it was found that a staggering 87% of the participants who used pycnogenol were asymptomatic after 6 months of supplementation.

Brain health
Pycnogenol improves blood circulation to the brain. It is one of a few substances that cross the blood-brain barrier to fight free-radical damage and inflammation in the brain. It promotes the formation of healthy neurons, promotes mitochondrial functioning, and has a balancing effect on mood and cognition. For this reason, pycnogenol may benefit those with ADD, ADHD, poor cognitive functioning and other brain- and mood-related disorders.
