Serrapeptase
Serrapeptase is a proteolytic enzyme that breaks down protein into smaller components. It is derived from the digestive systems of silkworms. They regurgitate serrapeptase to break free from their cocoons. Although the serrapeptase enzyme was discovered in silkworms, it is now extracted from Serratia bacteria and grown in controlled environments without the use of a silkworm host.
Breaking down biofilms
Biofilms form when a group of microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, parasites and viruses attach themselves to a surface and create a colony. A slime layer with glue-like consistency forms over and around the growing colony, acting as a ‘shield’. This barrier protects the colony against our immune system as well as antimicrobial treatments. This results in poor wound healing and recurrent infections.
It is estimated that up to 80% of infections in the body are associated with biofilm formation. These barriers are continuously changing, fueling inflammation and compromising the immune system. Persistent infections that are associated with biofilms include middle ear, urinary tract and gastrointestinal infections, and sinusitis to name a few. Serrapeptase benefits us by weakening the biofilms around antibiotic-resistant bacteria. A combination of antibiotics and serrapeptase may be effective to treat infections caused by these types of resistant infections. DNA BioPharm Serra-Fast contains serrapeptase as well as synergistic herbs such as Brahmi and curcumin to fight biofilms.
Cardiovascular benefits
Plaque in the arteries consists of fat, cholesterol, cellular waste products, calcium and fibrin. It can block coronary and brain arteries leading to heart attacks and strokes. It can also damage kidney arteries leading to high blood pressure. Serrapeptase has been shown to gradually dissolve the plaque that is associated with cardiovascular disease. It basically digests dead and inflamed tissue.
Chronic bronchitis and sinusitis
Bronchitis involves chronic coughing, heavy mucous production, chest pain and difficulty breathing. Conventional medicine treats it with repeated prescriptions for antibiotics, steroid inhalers, expectorants and other toxic compounds. Serrapeptase loosens sputum and mucous in the lungs and sinuses and reduces the frequency of infections. The bronchi, lungs and sinuses get a better chance of healing and dependence on drugs is markedly reduced.
Studies indicate that, when antibiotics are used in conjunction with serrapeptase, more antibiotics are delivered to the site of the bronchial infection. Reducing the sticky and obstructing mucous with serrapeptase enables the antibiotic to be more effective.
Irritable bowel syndrome
Serrapeptase improves irritable bowel syndrome without side effects by digesting dead and inflamed tissue. Serrapeptase may prevent the build-up of toxic waste in the gut that causes irritation.
Arthritis and muscular pain
Owing to its natural anti-inflammatory properties, Serrapeptase is a must for those suffering from arthritis or muscular pain. The enzyme helps reduce swelling, redness and pain. Those with joint problems, slow-healing injuries, and those recovering from surgical procedures may benefit from taking Serrapeptase.
Cancer
Serrapeptase can make certain cancer treatments, both natural and conventional, work better. It dissolves the outer protective layers of cancer cells and tumours, thus enabling the immune system, drugs or natural anti-cancer agents to attack the cancer cells. Proteolytic enzymes like serrapeptase can stimulate the body to produce something called tumour necrosis factor (TNF). TNF has been shown to kill cancer cells and stop viruses from reproducing.
Fibrocystic breast disease
This condition, often a forerunner of breast cancer, can involve painful swollen breasts, especially premenstrually. Cysts and areas of hardness in the breasts can be quite uncomfortable for most women. Double-blind studies conclude that serrapeptase can reverse this condition.
The Serra-Fast edge
Serrapeptase and many other enzymes are destroyed by stomach acid. DNA-Biopharm Serra-Fast capsules are slow-release DRcaps® from Capsugel. Clinical evidence shows that the DR Capsule takes about 45 minutes to start disintegrating compared to the 5 minutes of a normal capsule. A complete release of the capsule’s contents thus takes place in the intestine.
