Mullein leaves and flowers has been used for centuries to address various health concerns. It is referred to as the healer of the respiratory system and for many, it is the go-to herb to soothe conditions such as coughs, colds, flu, bronchitis, a tight chest and asthma. Some of its health benefits include:

  1. Loosens Mucous: Mullein acts as an expectorant, which means it helps thin mucous (phlegm) and makes it easier to cough up. By clearing mucous, it helps prevent the buildup of thick plugs in the lungs that could block airflow.
  2. Calms Inflammation: When dealing with lung and throat issues, mullein can provide relief. Its flowers and leaves contain mucilage, which forms a protective film on the moist linings inside your respiratory tract. This coating soothes discomfort caused by dry, inflamed mucous membranes. Drinking mullein tea is soothing to the throat.
  3. Boosts the immune system: Mullein contains antioxidants, including vitamin C and flavonoids. These compounds help protect cells from oxidative damage and strengthen the immune system.
  4. Fights Germs: Mullein’s anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties supports the body’s ability to fight bacterial and viral infections.
  5. Calming ear ache: Soak mullein in olive oil for a few weeks before use. A little bit of garlic oil can be added to the mix. Apply a few drops to the ear, using a dropper dispenser.
  6. Pain: Feet can be soaked in mullein tea to ease the symptoms of muscle cramps, gout or burning feet.
