We cannot live without fibre

Our bodies need fibre to balance blood sugar levels, help curb appetite, stabilise mood, boost concentration levels and keep us energised throughout the day. Fibre is essential for good gut health. It helps keep us regular, binds to toxins to expel them readily and serves as food for the gut microbes. A diet rich in fibre helps maintain good cholesterol levels and does wonders for those on slimming programmes.

The typical modern diet is very low in fibre. No wonder lifestyle conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, dementia and cancer are so common. When grains are refined, a considerable number of valuable nutrients are lost. People on grain-free and refined diets who avoid fibre-rich beans and pulses may want to take extra fibre to keep them healthy. Good grain-free, non-irritating options include psyllium husks and chia seeds.

Komati Chia Seeds 500 g
Chia is rich in plant-based omega-3 fats necessary to lower inflammation, balance hormones, boost cognition and support the cardiovascular system.
It is rich in protein – two tablespoons contain 4.7 grams of protein.
It is a rich source of minerals such as zinc, magnesium and phosphorus.
Chia seeds are powerful free-radical scavengers. They contain more antioxidants than blueberries.
Their fibre has prebiotic properties – they feed our good bacteria.
Chia can be used as part of a slimming plan. The seeds contain chlorogenic acid (also found in green coffee beans), a compound that increases fat burning and helps prevent the reuptake of carbohydrates in the gut. The fibre-rich seeds make us feel fuller for longer and help prevent sweet cravings.
Chia contains quercetin, a natural anti-inflammatory compound that also lowers histamine levels.
Chia may help to normalise blood pressure levels. It is rich in magnesium and arginine.
Chia seeds are one of the best options to use for constipation. Two tablespoons of chia contain a staggering 10 grams of soluble fibre that absorbs water very well. The result is a gel-like mixture that is super-effective for cleaning the colon without causing diarrhoea. It takes a few days to start working and is safe to take during pregnancy.
